Software Review – jZip
November 8th, 2007 BrendanFor my very first blog post ever, I thought I would go ahead and do something that I know pretty well and that is computers. So for today, I am going o review a very cool piece of software I just happen to run across called jZip. Its a small freeware zip utility reminiscent of the golden days of Winzip. Its simple, has a small footprint, and useful, three very important things when I am looking at a new piece of software.
Anyone familiar with the old Winzip will instantly be at home with this software. Its main window has only what you need and nothing else to get in your way and the only extra bit of “fluff” that I could find was a very handy Style option. This option allows you to change from a “normal” view where all the files are just listed to a Windows Explorer style view with two columns.
As for formats, you have many options, more than enough for the average user. You can create archives in
- .7z
- .Zip
- .Gz
- .Bzip2
and you can open
- .Zip
- .Rar
- .7z
- .Iso
- Gz
- Gzip
- .Tbz
- .Tgz
- .Tar
- .Bz2
So all in all after using this program for a few hours, I would rate this a 4.5 out of 5. All the features I want to see and a freeware price. You can find jZip here at http://www.jzip.com
